If you want to start your own business, Ebay has been a good way  to dip your toe in the business of ecommerce.

After all, you don’t have to worry about getting traffic. You don’t have to worry that much about  payment, now that Ebay owns Paypal and has seamlessly integrated it. All you really need to do is find stock to sell and deliver it!

And of course Ebay has been the driving force behind many thousands and thousands of success stories . I have personally met many people who’s entire income depends on Ebay. But I have also heard a lot of discenting voices - mainly about the rising commission charges. Sooner or later, there comes a time when you need to decide when it’s time to go it alone and get into Ecommerce properly.

But just how do you decide if it’s the right time to take the plunge.Let’s take a look at the factors:

1) Do you make a large proportion of repeat sales? If so, you should be be maintaining contact with customers directly after the first purchase and directing them to your ecommerce site for all subsequent  purchases.

2) Is your product range searched for on Google in a reasonable volume? Chances are if it was searched for on Ebay, it will be searched for on Google - and visitors via Google won’t cost you in Ebay commissions. Search for the Google Adwords tool, and do some research on search volumes, just to check.

3) What are your monthly charges paid to Ebay? If they are getting towards 4 figures, you’d definitely want to explore getting a stand alone ecommerce site to supplement your Ebay sales, in order to cut some of those commission charges.

That should help you consider if it’s time to  go it alone with your own ecommerce website. Do note though that you shouldn’t  abandon Ebay completely, as it’s good for acquiring your customers initially.

There are some features your e-commerce website must have — and there are some that you may need in the future .  By looking at them carefully and getting it right first time you will save yourself a lot of money further down the line

Unlimited products and unlimited categories

You want to be able to easily add your own products and menu categories to your website without having to call your Web designer every the time you need something changed.  Check there aren’t any restrictions on the number of products you can add too, as there may be hidden costs if you go over the maximum number - or worse, the system may not be able to handle it and you may need an expensive upgrade.  Content management

Ideally you want to be able to change text on your website — such as information about shipping charges, terms of business etc — without having to rely on your Web designer to do it, who will probably charge you each time.

To do this you need a  content management system to edit the text  pages yourself.

Easy-to-use admin area

An easy-to-use admin area is a must as you will be using it every day.  You need to easily be able to see new orders, view customer details, add new stock etc and this should all be easy to do via your admin area or control panel.

Comprehensive reporting

You need to access a variety of reports on visitor statistics such as what items have been viewed etc so that you can make educated decisions on which new products to stock, what products you should get rid of etc. Accurate  reporting gives you vital market intelligence which you can then use to really expand and grow your business.

Newsletter and e-mail functions

It is absolutely essential that your ecommerce site has the ability to stay in touch with your customers, through email. You need to encourage repeat purchases, which you can do by sending email newsletters, special offer, details of new products etc. When choosing your ecommerce system or web designer, make sure you get all these features.

Link manager

You need the ability to add links to other sites without having to resort to your web designer each time. Making link partnerships is an essential part of getting good search engine rankings so make sure you have this feature built in.

Search engine optimisation

Having mentioned search engines, another valuable feature is the ability to specify Meta tags for each product page you create. Meta tags are the “hidden code” that search engines use to determine what your page is about, so by making sure you can put the relevant keywords in for each product, you will give your site a huge advantage.

Other features

There are lost of other features that you can get in your website, such as specials section, bestsellers section, recommended items etc,  so do think about what you may want in the future and ask for it to be included it now as it will be a lot cheaper than to get it put in later.
